Welcome back to the Library Research Notes Newsletter!
This weekend was my 49th birthday. I had a nice relaxing weekend, away from work, but also started feeling my age as ‘in the middle’. Mid-life. I realize I’ve been in mid-life for a little while now, but for some reason 49 has hit me as such and I suddenly feel like a full adult. With that, I wanted to send a newsletter (as it has been a while) but didn’t want to dive very deeply into any specific topic. So this will be a short one.
I am including the video at the top of the newsletter as a primer for issues going forward. Dr. Butler is one of the leaders in the study of gender as a social construct and has contributed important works to the field of sociology. Through the end of 2023 and into the beginning of 2024, this newsletter is going to focus on gender theory and links to all facets of society. There have been a lot of big changes in the United States over the past few years when it comes to sex, gender, identity, sexuality, bodily autonomy, and the right to live and love how we wish without intervention from the state. The legislation that has been passed in the last couple of years has a history of discrimination attached to it and the groundwork took decades to lay. Conservatives have been working on maintaining the rights of the few over the many for longer than any one of them has been alive. They have played the long game to get here and we need to be aware and awake in the face of this hatred.
Thank you for hanging in there as I took some time away to refocus and move forward. Beginning in 2024, I’ll be using this newsletter as a way to inform my writing elsewhere (hippiegrrl explains it all, gen X reactions, robots don’t dance) and create a series around different topics. I hope that you will continue to read along and enjoy and, as always, I invite you to chat with fellow readers in the threads!
